Records of Pendlebury can be found as far back as 1201. It derives its name from the Old English for 'Manor House' of 'Fort by the hill', 'Penn' possibly being the Celtic word for Hill. The township was formerly in Lancashire in the Eccles Ecclesiastical Parish and Salford Poor Law Union.

The two pictures above show the Co-op on Bolton Rd, the first is 1979 and the second is 1999. Note the extension which was built and movement of the entrance. The two rear windows are now as at 2007 bricked up as only half the original store is now used due to Sunday trading laws. The rear end is now used for storage.
