Below are a few links and some tips and tricks if you are keen on recycling and like doing your bit for the environment. They may also save you money too!
Below are some great ideas for saving the planet and also helping you to save money in the process:
1. Recycle!
Every household in Salford produces nearly a tonne of waste every year. On average every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every two months!
Use your brown box or if you have them, your new coloured wheeled bins to get rid of your waste.
Click on the link for Salford Councils information on recycling and also the places where you can take larger items or click the second (arrows) icon for tips on making money from old CD's to what to do with your old hot water bottle!
2. Stop unwanted junk mail - Mailing Preference Service
Unwanted, unread Direct Mail has no place in anyone's home. And if you're not interested in receiving it, Mailing Preference Service will update their records for Direct Mail companies to see and adjust their lists as you request. This is a free service and not only stops unwanted junk mail but also helps save paper waste too!
3. Make money from your old mobile phone.
Got an old mobile in your sock drawer? Turn it into either £3 for Marie Curie Cancer Care or 300 Tesco Clubcard Points.
4. Re-use carrier bags.
Take them with you when you go shopping next time or better still, buy a strong re-useable bag such as Asda and Tesco's "Bag For Life." If you do have alot of carrier bags spare then take them to your nearest store where they will gladly take them off your hands and recycle them. And if you can carry your items without a bag then do so.
5. Buy larger packs
if you use more of certain things, consider buying bigger packs of them. This uses less packaging and may also save you money in the long run.
6. Insulate your home.
A well-insulated house requires less heating and cooling to maintain a comfortable indoor climate, and that translates directly into smaller energy bills.
7. Use energy saving light bulbs
They use up to 80 per cent less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light. In other words, they can help you to save money and energy, all in one wise purchase. And by saving energy, you'll be helping to fight climate change too. And dont forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room.
8. Do you really need to fax?
Its now the 21st Century, Get rid of the fax machine, save the paper and register with a company to get faxes to and from your computer. Go to www.efax.com and chose the Free Version.
This gets you a fax number on which people can send you a fax. The fax then appears on your computer screen. Using your computer, you can also send faxes to normal fax machines.
9. Do you really need to print?
Think before you print. And if you do need to print, use RECYCLED paper and BOTH sides of it.
